camping flask
A Question for Camping Experts and Scouts!?

Is there a physical name for two sticks put in the ground on each side of a campfire, and then a stick across the middle to hang flasks and food over the fire?
And please dont just say ‘Yes’, i actually need the name.

We’ve always just called them fireirons, sometimes differentiating by calling them two side pieces uprights. But there might be a more technical name for them.

BTW, despite what another poster told you, the crosspiece is not called a crane. A crane is a hinged device, usually triangularly shaped, that swings in and out of the firebox. Cookware is hung from it and swung over the fire. Heat is contolled by the height above the coals.

In a hearth, the predecessor to a crane, comparable to the crosspiece on an open fire, was called a gin pole. The crane was considered a major labor-saving (not to mention safety) device.

The crosspiece we’re talking about isn’t a spit, either. A spit is a metal rod that pierces meat and holds it over the fire. It’s usually rotated as well, whereas the crosspiece supports cookware, just as a gin pole did. .
