I have some questions about pack saddles?
Are they adjustable to fit most horses? What is worth the money and what isn’t? Can you get the basic saddle and add as you go? I would like to be able to carry camping/fishing supplies for a week or so. Someday it would be great to go on a hunting trip using only the horses as transportation.
I’ve had horses most all my life but am a novice with pack saddles. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Pack saddle can come in slightly different sizes, but they are pretty much one-size-fits-most. You adjust the fit with blankets or pads.
If you are doing it just for the occasional week trip – I would get the panniers that fit right to a western saddle. McClelland, Decker, and Sawbuck saddles can be complicated to use and expensive unless you are using it every day. I would look into panniers that go right on your western saddle.
I would also recommend a book called Horses, Hitches, and Rocky Trails by Joe Back. You can get it on Amazon for ten bucks – its a good book for someone looking to get into packing.
