If he refuses to go to basic training, what will happen?
My husband shipped out to basic training on Oct 15th. He got to a base in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, but he is not in his actual basic training camp yet because he is still in processing. He has been every since he left for his asthma. So he past the asthma test on friday and they are planning to ship him out to his official basic training area on wednesday. But he changed his mind and doesn’t want to go because of a lot of issues that are going on at home. With his mother becoming terminally ill and nobody there to take care of her and a lot of other things. So he decided that when they try to send him to the official basic training area he is just going to refuse to go until they send him home. Do you think this will even work? If so, what will happen? What kind of discharge will he get? What are other ways to get out before they send him?
Refusing an order is not the way to go. He should talk to the chaplain about this. He will probably get ELS’d, entry level separation, but that doesn’t mean he will go home right away.
I know one hard and fast rule, though, it’s easier to just do BCT and get it over with. They told this to people when I was in AIT, and they weren’t lying. A few people refused to train, and they were still there leading lives of misery when we graduated.
As for BCT, I don’t really know. One guy quit, but we never heard from him again or found out what happened to him. Since your husband just got there, he hasn’t served six months, meaning his service hasn’t been characterized. It will probably be like he was never there. I suspect if he tries this, his remaining time will not be enjoyable.
Like I said, have him talk to the chaplain, as that is the person best equipped to deal with issues like family problems that can take a soldier’s focus away from him due to problems at home. Also, ask his mother what she thinks he should do. I would think she would want him to stay there and finish his training. Good luck.
